Jozee Jackson has the heart of a champion

Updated: Jun 12, 2020

In rodeo, gold buckles represent winners. But, in the western culture, it's not enough to wear the gold; real champions are measured by the way they live, the kindness they show, and the courage they possess.

Jozee Jackson is the prime example of a true champion. Those closest to Jozee describe her as a funny, loving, and giving child. In the arena, Jozee has a competitive nature and loves to win, but she is equally happy for her friends or cousins when they have success.

Jozee is the epitome of courage. By the time she was four years old, she had survived three open-heart surgeries and a heart transplant.

Despite her health issues, Jozee has ridden horses off and on since she was an infant. Last year for Christmas she was gifted her black and white pony, appropriately named Spirit, and the two have been best friends ever since.

Spirit is special not only for the way he takes care of Jozee, but also in the way he perseveres. Spirit only has one eye, and it doesn't seem to affect his attitude or ability.

Together, Jozee and Spirit are an example of everything a champion should be. They have a desire to win, but humility when they fall short. They have been dealt their share of challenges, but they are stronger than anything that tries to hold them back.

They have the heart, drive, and spirit of a champion.

Jozee and Spirit compete at Fowler Roping Club and the Ace of Spades gymkhana.
